IPM Motors
One of the key factors in improving the throughput of a Canter machine in a sawmill is the ability to stop the log quickly if required by the control system. The faster the log can be stopped, the smaller the gap between logs is required to be. A smaller gap means more logs per shift !
The performance of the motor/VFD system is crucial to the ability to stop the log quickly. One of the things that has a significant effect on this is the inertia of the motor. Because the motor is spinning quickly - its inertia is a significant contribututor to the log stopping performance.
A traditional induction motor is a relatively high inertia device. By replacing this motor with a low inertia motor - we can improve the machine performance
Arrow Speed has chosen Reliance IPM motors in conjunction with our high performance Mitsubishi VFDs as the new standard of performance.
The Reliance IPM motor uses rare earth magnets embedded in the rotor instead of rotor bars. This allows for significantly smaller rotor with 20% of the inertia of a regular induction motor.
